In a breaking development, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Trudeau have publicly revealed their decision to separate after being married for 18 years. The official announcement was made through social media on Wednesday. The Prime Minister’s office confirmed that they have already finalized the divorce agreement. Trudeau becomes the second Prime Minister of Canada to experience a divorce while in office. Together, they have three children – aged 15, 14, and 9.
This is not the first time the Trudeau family has encountered such a situation. Trudeau’s father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, had also gone through a divorce with his wife Margaret in 1979, and they officially separated in 1984. Justin and Sophie had tied the knot in 2005, and the Canadian leader has always emphasized the significance of family in his public statements.
Following the announcement of their separation, the Prime Minister’s office conveyed that their primary focus would be on supporting their children, who will be under joint custody. While Sophie will have her official residence in Ottawa, she is expected to spend most of her time at the Prime Minister’s residence due to the children’s care.
Justin Pierre James Trudeau, known for his background as a Canadian politician and former teacher, assumed the role of the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada in November 2015. He has been actively involved in the Liberal Party since April 2013. Trudeau is the second-youngest individual to hold the position of Prime Minister in Canada, following in the footsteps of his father, Pierre Trudeau.
His educational journey includes a Bachelor’s degree in Literature from McGill University in 1994 and another Bachelor’s degree from the University of British Columbia in 1998. During his early education, he pursued studies in French, Humanities, Mathematics, and Drama at Jean-de-Brébeuf College.
