Cambridge University is among the elite universities to ban ChatGPT due to plagiarism issues. An AI chatbot that scours the web in response to users’ questions has raised concerns it could be used by students for plagiarism.
Now the i news outlet reports that Cambridge is one of eight of the 24 universities in the Russell Group to warn students that using it for teaching is considered “academic misconduct”. Cambridge University sanctions for plagiarism including an entire year-assessment being downgraded and an automatic ‘zero’ mark for a paper.
In an interview with i news, a spokesman for Cambridge University said “Students must be the authors of their own work. Content produced by AI platforms, such as ChatGPT, does not represent the student’s own original work so would be considered a form of academic misconduct to be dealt with under the university’s disciplinary procedures.”
The University of Oxford also has a similar Policy Bristol, Edinburgh, and Manchester are other universities that have banned students from using ChatGPT for their academic work.
