California voters rejected an effort to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom from office in early returns Tuesday. The state of California widely voted “No” on the Republican’s recall.
Newsom cast it as a win for science, women’s rights, and other liberal issues, and it ensures the nation’s most populous state will remain in Democratic control as a test bed for progressive policies.
Major U.S. media outlets called the race for Newsom shortly after polls closed, as early returns showed the “no” vote with a commanding lead. Nearly 66% of voters opposed the recall, with 34% in support.
“No is not the only thing we said tonight,” Newsom said, speaking at state Democratic Party headquarters in Sacramento. “We said yes to science. We said yes to vaccines. We said yes to ending this pandemic. We said yes to people’s right to vote without fear of fake fraud or voter suppression.”
On the slate of candidates to replace Newsom, Republican radio talk show host Larry Elder led with 44.7%. Democrat Kevin Paffrath had 10.4% and former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, a Republican, had 9.2%. of the vote.
