Britney Spears’s father, Jamie, has been suspended from her 13-year conservatorship, effective immediately.
An L.A. judge on Wednesday removed Jamie Spears from her conservatorship, releasing the pop star from the power he had over her life for more than 13 years.
Jamie was ousted from the legal arrangement just weeks after he asked an LA judge to end the conservatorship.
The singer has been blocked from controlling her finances and personal affairs for 13 years due to the conservatorship, which she called “abusive” during a previous hearing.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny made the decision months after Britney and her lawyer pleaded for her father’s removal in dramatic court hearings.
“The current situation is untenable,” Penny said after hearing arguments from both sides. “It reflects a toxic environment which requires the suspension of James Spears.”
Spears’ conservatorship was established in 2008, after she was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation. The oversight is split into two parts, conservator of the person and the conservator of the estate. Her father, Jamie Spears, did both until September 2019, when a woman named Jodi Montgomery took over the personal side.
