According to a statement released by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the body discovered in the Mount Baldy wilderness has been positively identified as that of missing British actor Julian Sands. The cause of death is still under investigation, pending further test results.
Sands went missing on January 13 while embarking on a solo hike in the snow-covered Baldy Bowl area of the San Gabriel Mountains, approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Los Angeles. Due to hazardous conditions and the risk of avalanches, search efforts primarily utilized drones and helicopters, as ground searches proved challenging, as reported by La Prensa Latina.
On June 24, hikers reported the discovery of human remains in the Mount Baldy wilderness to authorities. The body was subsequently taken to a local coroner’s office to determine the identity of the deceased. Local media states that the family of the 65-year-old actor expressed their gratitude in a statement, highlighting Sands as a “wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and an original and collaborative performer.”
Julian Sands gained recognition for his notable performances in acclaimed films such as “A Room with a View” (1985), “Naked Lunch” (1991), and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011), as well as his role in the television series “Smallville” (2009-2010). He was born on January 4, 1958, in Otley, England.
In the 1980s, Sands relocated to California to pursue his Hollywood career. The actor was married to U.S. journalist Evgenia Citkowitz and had three adult children.
