Washington D.C. (GNB): The Republican-led U.S. Senate on Friday voted to override President Trump’s veto on a National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) bill.
More than two-thirds of the Senate voted to reject the president’s veto of the $741 billion NDAA bill. The Senate voted 81-13 for the NDAA bill. A two-thirds majority is required to override a presidential veto in both chambers.
Before the debate began, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said he was determined to pass the bill.
“Here’s what the Senate is focused on – completing the annual defence legislation that looks after our brave men and women who volunteer to wear the uniform.
He added -“We’ve passed this legislation 59 years in a row. And one way or another, we’re going to complete the 60th annual NDAA and pass it into law before this Congress concludes on Sunday.”
The first time the Republican led- U.S. Senate has voted to override a veto by President Trump.
The NDAA is a large bill that sets priorities and funding for the military for the next year and includes money for soldiers and military projects.
House Speaker Nanci Pelosi twitted -“The full U.S. Congress delivered a resounding rebuke to President Trump’s reckless assault on America’s military & national security by overriding his senseless veto of the National Defense Authorization Act”.
President Trump, who leaves office in a few weeks, objected to certain provisions in the bill.
