U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he is “strongly considering” imposing large-scale banking sanctions, economic sanctions, and tariffs on Russia as the war in Ukraine intensifies.

In a statement posted on Truth Social this morning, Trump cited reports that Russia is “absolutely pounding” Ukraine on the battlefield and urged both nations to negotiate a ceasefire and a “final settlement agreement on peace.” He warned that unless peace talks begin immediately, he would move forward with significant economic measures against Russia.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!” Trump wrote.

The statement signals a potential shift in Trump’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. While he has previously claimed he could end the war “within 24 hours” if elected, this latest post suggests a more aggressive approach toward Moscow through financial and trade penalties.

It remains unclear what specific actions Trump could take, given that he is currently in office. However, his remarks could influence Republican policy discussions and U.S. diplomatic efforts.

The Biden administration had already imposed extensive sanctions on Russia since the invasion began in 2022, targeting banks, energy exports, and military suppliers. Trump’s call for additional measures raises questions about how his policy would differ from the previous administration’s approach.

This developing story comes as the war in Ukraine reaches a critical phase, with increased Russian offensives and continued Western military aid to Kyiv. Experts believe Trump’s statement could pressure both sides to engage in negotiations, but it remains to be seen whether his rhetoric will have a tangible impact on the conflict.

Stay tuned for further updates.
