(GNB-Delhi): The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), India demanded Netflix to pull down its recent release, Bombay Begums.
Apparently, NCPCR finds some scenes from the series featuring the youngest protagonist questionable.
Two Twitter handle reportedly raised the concern on Alankrita Shrivastava’s show and put it under NCPCR’s scanner.
“From normalisation of minors indulging in casual sex we now have web series showing minors having Cocaine. Screengrab from Bombay Begums where a 13yr old is snorting coke as the party she goes to is all about alcohol, drugs. Sink it in,” a Twitter user Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj took strong objection to the depiction of children in Netflix’s Bombay Begum web-series.
A popular Twitter user @GemsOfBollywood, known for exposing the Hindi film industry for Hinduphobic and other problematic content, shared a snippet from the web series where girls are shown taking pictures of their “developed body parts” and send them to a classmate.
The user posted a video clip and tweeted- “Tilakdhari corrupt politician reads Bhagwad Geeta published by iskcon to conclude that Dharma of woman is to satisfy his lust (We read the same Geeta and found it to be totally opposite).”
NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo is quoted as saying, “We have sought stopping the streaming of Bombay Begums over the inappropriate portrayal of children in the series.’’
The notice has given 24 hours to the streaming platform the remove the show. However, there is no response from Netflix’s side yet.
A representative of Netflix India met the chairman of child commission Priyank Kanoongo in person today to give their reply regarding notice on the objectionable depiction of minors in Bombay Begums.
