WASHINGTON (GNB): President Biden on Tuesday called on the Senate to pass gun bills passed by the House earlier this month that would tighten gun laws.

He said that he and first lady Jill Biden were “devastated” by Monday’s shooting in Boulder, Colorado.

“Jill and I are devastated for the lives that have been shattered by gun violence in Colorado. Less than a week after the horrific murders in Georgia, another American city is scarred by a senseless attack. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the survivors”, President tweeted.

“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone another hour, to take common sense steps that will save lives in the future,” Biden said on Tuesday, adding that “we can ban assault weapons.”

“This is not and should not be a partisan issue,” Biden said at the White House. “It’s an American issue that will save lives, American lives. We must act.”

“We can ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines in this country once again,” said Biden, recalling that Congress previously overcame its divisions to pass a 10-year ban on assault weapons back in 1994.

“I got that done when I was a senator. It passed,” said Biden, who was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time. “It was a law for the longest time. And it brought down these mass killings. We should do it again.”

“It will save lives,” he said of the House-approved legislation. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said he would bring the bills to the floor, but their fate is uncertain in a tightly split Senate.

Biden’s remarks come a day after 10 people, including a police officer, died in a shooting in a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.

Police identified the victims on Tuesday, ranging in age from 20 to 65. They also said suspect Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, of Arvada, Colorado, is in custody.
