(GNB- Washington D.C.): President Joe Biden has signed an executive order Sunday that aims to protect the right to vote and ensure all eligible citizens can freely participate in the electoral process.
The order directs US federal agencies to “consider ways to expand citizens’ opportunities to register to vote and to obtain information about and participate in the electoral process”, according to the statement shared by the White House on Sunday.
“It is the policy of my Administration to promote and defend the right to vote for all Americans who are legally entitled to participate in elections. It is the responsibility of the Federal Government to expand access to, and education about, voter registration and election information, and to combat misinformation, in order to enable all eligible Americans to participate in our democracy”, it reads.
The executive order also expands voter access and registration efforts for communities often overlooked in outreach, including the disabled, military serving overseas and the incarcerated.
Biden’s order was announced during a recorded address on the 56th commemoration of “Bloody Sunday, when state troopers and police attacked civil rights marchers in 1965 in Selma, Alabama, who were protesting against racial discrimination at the voting booth.
