Bangladesh has banned the newspaper of the main opposition party. The publication was stopped after the government ordered the suspension of the large-sized daily Dinkal published in the Bengali language. Freedom of expression has been curbed in Bangladesh by this move of the government.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government suppressed criticism of the decision. Western countries, including the US, have expressed concern about the government’s move. Hundreds of journalists and press workers have become unemployed due to the closure of the newspaper, which has been close to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for more than three decades.
On December 26, the publication of the newspaper continued after an appeal was made to the High Court Judge-led Press Council against the order given by the Dhaka District Officer to close the newspaper.
Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, the managing editor of the newspaper, said that after the council approved the order of the district officer on Sunday, they were forced to stop publication. The Bangladesh Press Council told AFP that the newspaper’s publication license was revoked because the newspaper violated the country’s Printing and Publishing Act. Source: AFP
