‘Atrangi Re’ is a classic example of what happens when a beautiful little thought is stretched to its limits. It becomes a holy mess! The film, touted as a unique love triangle (it has shades of Bhansali’s ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’), actually touches upon myriad subjects like groom kidnapping, mental illness, even magic! Still, the attempt to do something different is laudable, the weak writing notwithstanding.
A feisty and headstrong girl, Rinku (Sara Ali Khan), who is madly in love with a magician named Sajjad Ali Khan (Akshay Kumar), is forcibly married off to Vishu (Dhanush), a Tamilian medico, who on his part, has a girlfriend (Dimple Hayathi) waiting in the wings. It would not be right to reveal more about this twisted plot. Suffice to say that there is more to it than meets the eye.
Although Sara Ali Khan is the driving force of the film, it is Dhanush who easily steals the show with his charming act. Longing, desperation, and heartbreak—there is no emotion the actor doesn’t convey effectively, even comedy. Though Sara Ali Khan puts her heart into her Rinku—who is a mix of Geet from Jab We Met and Bobby Batlawala Grewal from Judgemental Hai Kya—scenes of heightened emotions reveal the chinks in her armor. Akshay Kumar in a cameo is integral to the story.
