During the festive period of Christmas, Nigeria was unfortunately marked by a series of devastating road accidents. The traffic police reported that these incidents resulted in the tragic loss of at least 15 lives, while another 70 individuals suffered injuries of varying severity.
The accidents, which took place across several regions of the country, coincided with the increased travel as people journeyed to join their loved ones for the holiday celebrations. Authorities have pointed to a mix of factors contributing to these accidents, including the surge in traffic, substandard road conditions, and instances of reckless driving.
One of the most severe incidents occurred on the Kaduna-Abuja expressway, a vital route connecting the northern and southern parts of Nigeria. A truck, heavily laden with passengers and goods, lost control and veered into a ditch. This accident, which took place early on Tuesday, claimed four lives and left 59 others injured. Kabir Nadabo, a commander for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kaduna, attributed the accident to overloading and driver fatigue.
On the same day, another accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway involved a minibus and resulted in two fatalities and six injuries. The FRSC identified overspeeding and loss of control as the causes, stating that the vehicle collided with a road barrier.
The southwestern state of Osun also witnessed a tragic accident on Monday night along the Ikirun-Ilaodo highway. The incident involved a minibus, which was carrying both passengers and goods. The driver, who was reportedly speeding excessively, lost control of the vehicle. This accident resulted in nine fatalities and five injuries.
In light of these incidents, the traffic police issued a statement urging motorists to adhere to road safety regulations. They also called on passengers, particularly those traveling in commercial vehicles, to caution drivers against speeding. The statement emphasized the importance of safety, especially during periods of increased travel.
