At least 14 children and one teacher were killed in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde County, Texas on Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott said.
Gov. Abbott said the authorities identified the shooter as an 18-year-old Uvalde resident. The man abandoned his vehicle and entered Robb Elementary with a handgun and possibly a firearm, the governor said.
The shooter is also dead and is believed to have been killed by responding officers, according to Gov. Abbott.
Two hospitals are treating those injured in the shooting.
The Uvalde Memorial Hospital said it received 13 children for treatment.
“UMH received 13 children via ambulance or buses for treatment. Two children have been transferred to San Antonio and one child is pending transfer,” Uvalde Memorial Hostpital wrote on Facebook. “Two individuals that arrived at UMH were deceased. No details are available.”
University Health in San Antonio is providing care for one child and one adult connected to the shooting. The 66-year-old woman is in critical condition; details of the child are not available yet.
Texans are grieving for the victims of this senseless crime & for the community of Uvalde, said Gov. Abbott.
“Cecilia & I mourn this horrific loss & urge all Texans to come together. I’ve instructed @TxDPS & Texas Rangers to work with local law enforcement to fully investigate this crime,” Gov. Abbott said in a tweet.
