An explosion was reported near the gate of Eidgha Mosque in Kabul on Sunday afternoon, Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesman and deputy minister for culture and information ministry said in a Twitter post.

According to Mujahid, the explosion happened among a crowd of people and has caused casualties.

However, he did not give any details about the type of explosion or the number of casualties.

The explosion happened during a prayer ceremony for Mujahid’s mother, who had passed away a few days ago, which was ongoing at the mosque, the TOLO news reported.

Local media reports indicate casualties have occurred. There are also unconfirmed reported that gunfire occurred. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incident.

Id Gah Mosque or Eid Gah Mosque is the second largest mosque in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. It is considered the cardinal religious mosque in the country, where a million people offer Eid prayers twice a year. It is located near the Mahmud Khan bridge and National Stadium in the eastern part of the city, in the Shar-e-barq of Kabul, which is one of the wealthier areas of the city.
