IT sector giant Amazon’s second round of layoffs will start soon. This has been confirmed by the company’s CEO Andy Jassy. Amazon said Monday it would cut 9,000 jobs across its cloud services, advertising, and Twitch units, CEO Andy Jassy said in a memo to staff on Monday.

He explained that the company has announced the second round of layoffs due to a possible recession.

The cuts come on top of previously announced layoffs, which began in November and continued through January. This round totaled more than 18,000 employees and primarily focused on retail, equipment, recruiting and HR staff.

Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy said the company has hired a substantial amount of employees over the past few years, but the uncertain economy has forced it to cut costs and headcount. Andy said that some people may ask on this decision why we did not announce this reduction in the roles we announced a few months ago. However, he has also made it clear that the company will also make new recruitments in some strategic areas.

“Given the uncertain economy in which we reside, and the uncertainty that exists in the near future, we have chosen to be more streamlined in our costs and headcount,” Jassy said. “The overriding tenet of our annual planning this year was to be leaner while doing so in a way that enables us to still invest robustly in the key long-term customer experiences that we believe can meaningfully improve customers’ lives and Amazon as a whole, ” he added.
