During a press conference held in New York, UN Secretary General António Guterres highlighted the perils associated with artificial intelligence (AI) and stressed the importance of creating a regulatory body to address these concerns.

Guterres expressed deep concern over the emergence of generative AI, the latest form of AI, and emphasized the urgency of the situation by stating that the alarm bells surrounding this technology were deafening.

Citing the warnings issued by scientists and experts who compare the existential threat posed by AI to that of nuclear war, Guterres urged the international community to take these warnings seriously. He emphasized the need for proactive measures to address the potential risks and challenges associated with AI.

To tackle this issue comprehensively, Guterres presented a position paper outlining proposals for global AI governance. As part of these proposals, he announced plans to establish a high-level advisory body dedicated to addressing AI-related matters.

While Guterres expressed his support for the creation of a regulatory authority, he emphasized that its formation would require collaboration with UN member states. Drawing inspiration from the International Atomic Energy Agency, he suggested that a similar framework could be adopted for the AI regulatory body.

Guterres’ call for the establishment of a regulatory body and his proposal for an advisory body demonstrate the UN’s commitment to addressing the ethical and societal implications of AI at a global level. By bringing together expertise from various stakeholders and fostering international cooperation, such initiatives aim to develop standards, guidelines, and principles that ensure responsible and ethical AI development and deployment.

As the international community engages in discussions on AI regulation, it is anticipated that policymakers, experts, and member states will work collectively to shape a regulatory framework that strikes a balance between innovation and safeguarding humanity’s well-being. Through collaborative efforts, it is possible to harness the transformative potential of AI while minimizing the associated risks.
