In March and April, President Biden unveiled two new spending packages, the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan, both of which aim to reverse the damage done by the pandemic and reshape the American economy.
However, while neither of them includes another round of stimulus checks, there are calls for Biden to pass further direct payments to help individuals and families with the economic fallout of covid-19.
The most significant comes from a group of 28 Democratic senators who have asked President Biden to include recurring stimulus check payments in the new infrastructure plan.
The President is already facing significant push-back from Republicans who argue that his existing infrastructure bill is too expensive, making the inclusion of recurring payments unlikely.
Six online petitions calling for Congress to deliver monthly stimulus checks of $2,000 until the end of the pandemic have now collectively surpassed 2.3 million signatures.
The largest Change.org petition for recurring stimulus checks—created by Stephanie Bonin, a Denver restaurant owner—asks the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to pass legislation that will provide monthly “$2,000 payments for adults and $1,000 payments for kids” until the pandemic ends.
The petition set up by a Colorado restaurant owner and mother, Stephanie Bonin, continues to draw support after it was first set up last year.
The petition reads: “I’m calling on Congress to support families with a $2,000 payment for adults and a $1,000 payment for kids immediately, and continuing regular checks for the duration of the crisis.”
“Our country is still deeply struggling. The recovery hasn’t reached many Americans – the true unemployment rate for low-wage workers is estimated at over 20% and many people face large debts from last year for things like utilities, rent and child care. These are all reasons that checks need to be targeted to people who are still struggling and that Congress needs to learn from this past year. It took nine months for Congress to send a second stimulus check, and just moments to spend it. Moving forward Congress needs to make recurring checks automatic if certain triggers are met. No more waiting around for our government to send the help we need. Sign to join our movement to get recurring checks to the people,” the petition reads.
At the time of publication, the petition has garnered an astonishing 2,299,543 signatures and is continuing to receive interest. Tom’s Guide reports that over 100,000 signees have added their names to the cause in the last two weeks alone.
