Washington D.C (GNB): US House of Representatives has voted to impeach President Donald Trump for “incitement of insurrection” at last week’s Capitol riots. Trump becomes the first president in US history to be impeached twice.

The article of impeachment passed largely by 232-197, included ten Republicans supporting a single impeachment count- “incitement of insurrection.”

Following the House impeachment today, President Trump will now have to face trial in Senate over Capitol riots, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated that a trial won’t begin until Trump is out of office.

These are the ten Republican lawmakers who voted “YES” on impeaching President Trump: Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA), Liz Cheney (WY), Anthony Gonzalez (OH), John Katko (NY), Adam Kinzinger (IL), Peter Meijer (MI), Dan Newhouse (WA), Tom Rice (SC), Fred Upton (MI), and David Valadao (CA).

Republican Rep. Peter Meijer of Michigan twitted: “President Trump betrayed his oath of office by seeking to undermine our constitutional process, and he bears responsibility for inciting the insurrection we suffered last week. With a heavy heart, I will vote to impeach President Donald J. Trump”.

This is the moment Donald Trump was officially impeached for an historic second time after the House of Representatives secured enough votes to charge him.

Mitch McConnell released a statement after House impeached Trump (see below): He says “The House of Representatives has voted to impeach the President. The Senate process will now begin at our first regular meeting following receipt of the article from the House”.

There is simply no chance that a fair or serious trial could conclude before President-elect Biden is sworn in next week
