The U.S. House on Monday passed a bill to increase $2,000 stimulus checks, replacing the prior approved $600 checks in the most recent coronavirus relief bill. The bill is now moved to the GOP-controlled Senate where its future remains unclear.

A measure to increase stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000 for most Americans as part of a COVID-19 relief package needs to be passed by the GOP-controlled Senate. The Senate expected to vote on the bill Tuesday afternoon where a two-thirds majority is also needed in order for the bill to move to President Trump to sign.

Senator Bernie Sanders said- “The House passed a $2,000 direct payment for working people. Now it’s the Senate’s turn. If McConnell doesn’t agree to an up or down vote to provide the working people of our country a $2,000 direct payment, Congress will not be going home for New Year’s Eve. Let’s do our job”.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said – “The House just took a strong, bipartisan vote to pass $2,000 checks. Tomorrow, I’ll move to pass the bill in the Senate. Workers, families, and people are crying out for help. Every Senate Democrat is for this relief. Senate Republicans should not stand in the way”.

The measure to increase stimulus checks would need to pass the Senate, and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has not yet said whether he will bring it for a vote.

If the U.S. Senate seconds the House action, the bill becomes law.
