The revised height of the world’s tallest peak Mt Everest has been revealed today. Nepal and China officially announced a revised height of Mount Everest is 8,848.86 (29,032ft).
Nepal and China had differed over its exact height but after each sent an expedition of surveyors to the summit, they have agreed that the official height is 8,848.86 metres (29,032ft), a bit more than their previous calculations.
Nepal had never previously measured the height of Mount Everest on its own but had used the 8,848 metres (29,028 feet) estimate made by the Survey of India in 1954 that includes snow.
A Chinese measurement in 2005 determined that the rock height of the summit was 8,844.43 metres (29,017 feet), about 3.7 metres (11 feet) less than the 1954 estimate.
The Nepal government had decided to measure the height of the summit again after claiming that the mountain height had changed due to various reasons including the devastating 2015 earthquake in the Himalayan region.
The Survey Department of Nepal started an exercise to measure the height of Mount Everest two years ago.
Officials of the government had coordinated with China, who sent its own team to measure the height of the Everest.
Nepal and China had agreed to jointly announce the revised height during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit in 2019.
