A catastrophic fuel tanker explosion in north-central Liberia has claimed the lives of at least 40 people, with another 83 injured, according to a report by Liberian newspaper FrontPage Africa. The country’s Deputy Health Minister and Chief Medical Officer, Francis Kateh, confirmed the tragic incident.
The disaster occurred on Tuesday when a gas truck overturned in the Mulbah Hill Community in Totota. The truck exploded shortly after the crash, causing a devastating fire. Tragically, many of the victims were people who had rushed to the site to siphon the leaking fuel.
The initial death toll was reported as 15, with 36 individuals wounded. However, the numbers have since escalated as more bodies were discovered and more people succumbed to their injuries. Among the victims were a woman and three children aged between six and nine years.
Those injured in the blast are currently receiving treatment at the Phebe Hospital. Some of the more severely wounded have been transferred to the 14 Military Hospital, John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, and ELWA Hospital, as per Kateh’s statement.
