In a devastating turn of events, floods have swept through southern Thailand, affecting thousands of homes and approximately 50,000 residents. The Interior Ministry’s Department for Disaster Response confirmed the news on Monday.
The floods, resulting from several days of heavy rainfall, have primarily impacted the provinces of Narathiwat and Yala, both of which border Malaysia. As of early Monday, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation estimated that 9,697 households have been affected by the floods. The majority of these, 9,558 homes, are located in Narathiwat, with the remaining 139 in neighboring Yala.
The floodwaters have not only inundated homes but have also led to the closure of eight schools whose ground floors were submerged. Furthermore, the surging waters have disrupted traffic in parts of southern Thailand by submerging roads and rail tracks.
In response to the crisis, the Department has dispatched teams to the two provinces to aid those affected and assess the damage. The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined as the situation continues to unfold.
This event underscores the increasing urgency for effective disaster management strategies in the face of unpredictable weather patterns.
