Las Vegas, a city known for its vibrant nightlife and entertainment, was struck by tragedy recently when a former professor opened fire at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), killing three people and injuring one. The suspect, identified as 67-year-old Anthony James Polito, was shot and killed by UNLV police officers after he exchanged gunfire with them outside Beam Hall, where the shooting occurred.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, the Incident The shooting occurred on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, around 11:45 a.m., when Polito arrived at the university armed with a handgun and a list of possible targets. He entered Beam Hall, a building that houses the Lee Business School, and began shooting randomly at students and faculty members on the third, fourth, and fifth floors. Three victims were found dead on the third and fourth floors, while a fourth victim managed to escape to the ground floor before being transported to Sunrise Hospital in life-threatening condition.

Polito then exited the building and encountered UNLV police officers, who had responded to the 911 calls. He fired at the officers, who returned fire and fatally wounded him. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

The Shooter According to Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Polito was a former professor who had recently applied for a job at UNLV. He had previously worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina. Colleagues and students expressed shock and disbelief at the news, describing Polito as quiet and reserved. However, some noted that he had been acting increasingly erratic and distant in the weeks leading up to the incident.

Investigators searched Polito’s residence in Henderson, Nevada, and retrieved several documents similar to a last will and testament, along with several computer and hard drive components, and ammunition consistent with the cartridge casings found at the scene. They also discovered that Polito had mailed 22 letters to various university personnel across the country, with no return address, before the shooting. The contents of the letters are being evaluated by investigators.

The motive for the shooting is still unknown, and none of the victims were named on Polito’s list of targets. Sheriff McMahill said that Polito had no criminal history or known affiliation with UNLV. He also praised the UNLV police officers for their quick and courageous response to the incident.

The Aftermath The incident has left the city in shock, and the university community is grappling with the news. UNLV has offered counseling services to students and staff affected by the incident and is cooperating fully with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.

As the city mourns the loss of four of its residents, questions are being raised about the shooter’s motive and whether more could have been done to prevent this tragedy. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in America and the urgent need for comprehensive solutions.
