In a historic moment, the Powerball® jackpot has been claimed by a fortunate Californian player. A single ticket sold in California has successfully matched all six numbers drawn on Wednesday night, resulting in a jaw-dropping Powerball jackpot of $1.765 billion. The cash value of this extraordinary win amounts to $774.1 million.
The winning numbers for the October 11th drawing were as follows: 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 for the white balls and 10 for the red Powerball. Additionally, the Power Play® multiplier for this remarkable jackpot was set at 2X.
With final ticket sales exceeding expectations, the jackpot surpassed its advertised estimate, making it the second-largest Powerball jackpot and the second-largest lottery jackpot ever won in the United States, trailing only behind the world-record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot claimed in California on November 7, 2022.
Drew Svitko, the Powerball Product Group Chair and Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director, congratulated the newest Powerball billionaire and the millions of players who won other cash prizes in the drawing. He emphasized the significant contribution of Powerball to funding public services and programs across the country.
The lucky ticket holder now faces a monumental decision between receiving an annuitized prize estimated at $1.765 billion or opting for a lump sum payment of $774.1 million. It’s worth noting that both prize options are subject to taxes. If the annuity option is chosen, it involves one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments, each increasing by 5% annually.
Participating lotteries are encouraging all players to check their tickets for the nine ways to win. Nationwide, the Powerball drawing on Wednesday night led to over 5.3 million winning tickets, including seven tickets in California, Florida, New York, Oklahoma, and Virginia, which matched all five white balls to win $1 million each.
Furthermore, two tickets sold in Arizona and Pennsylvania managed to double their $1 million prize by including the Power Play® multiplier feature, bringing the total to $2 million per play. A total of 121 tickets won $50,000 prizes, and 24 tickets secured $100,000 prizes.
This jackpot win occurred on the 36th drawing of the jackpot run, marking the first time that two consecutive Powerball jackpot cycles have produced billion-dollar grand prizes. The previous Powerball jackpot was won on July 19th when a California ticket holder claimed a $1.08 billion jackpot.
Powerball, with tickets priced at $2 per play, is available in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Over half of the proceeds from ticket sales remain within the state where the ticket was purchased. Powerball drawings are broadcast live every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET from the Florida Lottery draw studio in Tallahassee and can also be live-streamed on Powerball.com.
The odds of winning a prize in Powerball are 1 in 24.9, while the odds of winning the jackpot stand at 1 in 292.2 million.
