Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a series of significant measures on Friday following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. These measures encompass new commitments in military support, economic aid, peace and security initiatives, and development investments for Ukraine.
In a press release published on his official website, Trudeau emphasized that Canada is adopting a new approach by transitioning towards multi-year assistance for Ukraine. This shift underscores Canada’s dedication to providing sustained support to its Ukrainian partner.
Canada and Ukraine have reaffirmed their strong partnership and friendship in the face of Russia’s ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine. During their meeting, the two leaders discussed a range of issues, including security, trade, energy, and people-to-people ties.
Prime Minister Trudeau expressed his solidarity with the people of Ukraine and pledged to stand with them “with as much as it takes, for as long as it takes”. He announced a new commitment of $650 million over three years for armoured vehicles produced in Canada for Ukraine’s long-term security. He also informed Zelensky that Canada would provide substantial macro-economic support to Ukraine in 2024.
The two leaders agreed to work with international partners to establish a working group of eminent individuals who will advise on the seizure and forfeiture of Russian assets. They also discussed the situation on the ground in Ukraine, including the progress of Ukraine’s counteroffensive and the diplomatic efforts toward a just and sustainable peace.
President Zelenskyy thanked Canada and Canadians for their continued support and praised the close people-to-people ties between the two countries. He noted that Canada has welcomed more than 175,000 Ukrainians and their family members since Russia’s war began.
The two leaders also signed a modernized Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA), which will support long-term security, stability, and economic development in Ukraine, while also ensuring high-quality market access terms for Canadian businesses. The new CUFTA will also enhance cooperation on energy security.
Prime Minister Trudeau and President Zelenskyy reaffirmed their intention to remain in close and regular contact.
