Singapore’s first female president, Madam Halimah Yacob, bid farewell to the nation on Wednesday (Sep 13) as she completed her six-year term as the head of state. Madam Halimah, who was Singapore’s first female president and its first Malay president in 47 years, leaves behind a legacy of social advocacy and leadership. She will be succeeded by Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, who was elected president on Sep 1 with a landslide victory.

In her final speech at the Istana, Madam Halimah thanked Singaporeans for their trust and support, and urged them to stay united and resilient in the face of challenges. She said she was humbled by the privilege to be the voice of Singaporeans and to work tirelessly on their behalf.

She also highlighted her efforts to champion social causes and empower women during her presidency. She said she was aware of the “distinct opportunity” she had to inspire other women and girls, and that she was “most grateful” for the chance to do so.

Madam Halimah, who was also Singapore’s first Malay president in 47 years, said she focused on creating a more caring, compassionate and just society. She cited the President’s Challenge as an example of how generous donations and advocacy helped communities in need.

She also praised the government and the people for their response to the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that she exercised her presidential discretionary powers to approve emergency funding for Singapore’s recovery. She said she was impressed by how Singaporeans observed safe distancing rules and supported each other during the crisis.

She added that Singapore still faces challenges as a small and open economy, such as shifting geopolitical alliances, economic rivalries, climate change and an ageing population. She said Singaporeans have a better chance of keeping the country exceptional “if we stand together and stay united”.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who attended the farewell reception along with other Cabinet ministers and senior officials, praised Madam Halimah for her contributions to the nation. He said she made Singaporeans more conscious of the less privileged and brought the nation closer.

He also thanked her for her support and advice on various issues, such as national security, foreign policy and constitutional matters. He said he looked forward to working with Mr Tharman, who will be sworn in as the ninth president of Singapore on Thursday.

Madam Halimah will return to her Yishun flat after leaving the Istana. She said she plans to spend more time with her family and friends, and to continue serving the community in various capacities.
