The Netherlands experienced a record-breaking heatwave on September 6, 2023, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country.

The extreme heat caused at least 12 deaths, mostly among elderly and vulnerable people, and disrupted public transport, power supply, and health services.

The Dutch government declared a state of emergency and urged people to stay indoors, drink plenty of water, and avoid strenuous activities.

The heatwave was part of a larger weather phenomenon that affected much of Europe in the summer of 2023, resulting in thousands of deaths, wildfires, droughts, and floods across the continent.

Scientists have attributed the unprecedented heatwaves to climate change, which has increased the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
