A special court in Islamabad has extended the judicial remand of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan till September 13 in connection with the cipher case, the Dawn reported.

The cipher case pertains to a diplomatic document which reportedly went missing from Khan’s possession. The PTI alleges that it contained a threat from the United States to oust Khan from power.

Imran Khan’s lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar asserted that the case against the PTI chief under the Secrets Act was “baseless” and said he would file a bail petition today.

The "Cipher case" refers to leaked documents in Pakistan accusing Prime Minister Imran Khan of illegal activities. The validity of these documents is disputed, and no concrete evidence has been provided to support the claims.

However, one of Khan’s counsels, Ali Ijaz Battar, questioned the former prime minister’s remand. “We have many questions. When was the PTI chairman remanded? How was the remand made possible without telling the party chief and his lawyers?” he asked.

The development comes amid a political crisis in Pakistan, with Khan’s supporters holding nationwide protests against his ouster through a no-confidence vote in April.

The PTI has accused the US of orchestrating Khan’s removal, a claim that Washington has denied.

What is cipher case on imran khan?

Cipher case is a term often used to describe a controversy surrounding certain leaked documents in Pakistan that allegedly implicated Prime Minister Imran Khan in illegal activities. The documents in question were leaked in 2021 and were presented as evidence against Khan, suggesting that he used a secret app named “Cipher” to communicate and issue orders to his subordinates. However, the validity and authenticity of these documents have been questioned, with some experts arguing that they may be part of a political conspiracy against Khan. As of now, no concrete evidence has been provided to substantiate the claims made in the cipher case.

The cipher case is seen as one of the key cases against Khan, and its outcome could have a significant impact on his political future.
