London, United Kingdom – The Metropolitan Police Service has reported that a total of 85 individuals were arrested on the opening day of the highly anticipated Notting Hill Carnival, an annual celebration of Caribbean culture and heritage. The event, which took place in the vibrant district of Notting Hill, saw thousands of attendees from across London and beyond.

The police statement, released at 21:30 on Sunday, confirmed that while a considerable number of arrests were made, no serious incidents were recorded during the festivities. Most of the apprehensions were related to offenses such as possession of weapons, drug-related activities, and sexual assaults, the statement revealed.

Ade Adelekan, the Deputy Assistant Commissioner responsible for overseeing the Notting Hill Carnival operation, emphasized the robust response of law enforcement. “Our officers will respond decisively where this takes place, which is evident from the 85 arrests made thus far,” Adelekan stated in the release. He also highlighted that the number of arrests was in line with their projected expectations for the carnival’s first day.

The Notting Hill Carnival, an annual street festival held on the final weekend of August, aims to pay tribute to the rich culture, arts, and heritage of the Caribbean community. The event attracts large crowds and features vibrant parades, music performances, and culinary delights. This year’s celebration commenced without any significant disturbances, thanks to the efficient security measures put in place by the authorities.
