A scheduled LATAM Airlines flight from Miami to Santiago took an unexpected and tragic turn as the pilot, Captain Ivan Andaur, passed away while on duty. The flight, designated as LA505, departed from Miami International Airport with 271 passengers onboard, bound for Santiago, Chile.

Approximately three hours into the journey, Captain Andaur, a veteran pilot with 25 years of service at LATAM, reportedly fell ill. He left the flight deck to seek medical assistance, but tragically collapsed while in the bathroom. The swift response of the flight crew, including emergency assistance from fellow crew members, was unfortunately unable to save his life.

In response to the medical emergency, the flight was diverted to Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport. Medical teams at the airport provided immediate care upon the aircraft’s arrival, but Captain Andaur was declared deceased.

LATAM Airlines Group issued a statement expressing their deep sorrow and extending heartfelt condolences to the family of Captain Andaur. The statement highlighted his dedication, professionalism, and valuable contributions over his extensive career with the airline. LATAM also emphasized that all necessary safety protocols were followed during the flight to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.

Instances of pilot incapacitation are rare, but not unheard of. Earlier this year, similar incidents have occurred, prompting pilots to make emergency landings for the safety of all onboard. In one notable case, a Southwest Airlines flight had to return to its departure airport when a pilot fell unwell shortly after takeoff. The quick thinking of the flight crew and the assistance of an off-duty commercial pilot ensured a safe outcome.
