The update (8/14) by County of Maui provides crucial information about the current state of the wildfires, containment efforts, road closures, restored services, and health advisories for the affected areas.

    Evolution of the Wildfire Situation

The Upcountry/Kula fire, initially reported on August 8, has seen significant progress with containment now at 60%. Despite the challenges posed by hot spots in difficult-to-reach areas, firefighters continue their valiant efforts to establish complete control lines. This fire has affected an estimated 678 acres of land.

In a positive development, the Lahaina fire, also reported on August 8, has reached 85% containment, affecting around 2,170 acres. Multiple fire crews are diligently monitoring the situation and addressing any potential flare-ups. Thankfully, there are currently no active threats associated with this fire.

The Pulehu/Kihei fire, reported on the same fateful day, has been successfully contained at 100%. Although the immediate threat has been averted, firefighting personnel remain vigilant to prevent any rekindling.

The Puʻukoliʻi / Kaanapali fire, which was reported on August 11, has been fully extinguished by August 12. However, it’s essential to note that complete extinguishment is only achieved when no burning material remains within the perimeter.

    Tragic Loss of Lives

Amidst the progress in containment efforts, the wildfire disaster has taken a tragic toll on the community. The Maui Police Department has confirmed a heart-wrenching total of 96 fatalities. The community stands united in mourning the loss of these individuals and offering support to those affected.

New Access System for West Maui

Starting August 14, a new access system will be implemented in West Maui to ensure efficient traffic management and prioritize safety. Detailed information can be found on the Maui Police Department website.

Ohana Fuels/ Minit Stop on Keawe Street in Lahaina and Kahana Gateway Shell are now open for gasoline, providing critical services to the community.

    Unsafe Water Advisory

Residents in Lahaina and Upper Kula areas are advised to exercise caution regarding water consumption. The county Department of Water Supply has released maps outlining affected areas. The advisory remains in effect for specific zones, urging residents to refrain from drinking or boiling tap water. Bottled water is recommended for all drinking, cooking, and hygiene purposes. Drinking water sites have been established in various parts of Lahaina and Kula.

    Emergency Shelters and Support

Multiple emergency shelters have been set up across Maui to accommodate those affected by the wildfire disaster. While media access is restricted for privacy reasons, these locations provide refuge and support to individuals in need. Hannibal Tavares Community Center, War Memorial Gymnasium, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kings Cathedral Church, Grace Bible Church, South Maui Community Park Gymnasium, and Maui High School have all opened their doors to those seeking shelter.

    Community Support and Resilience
