In a recent development, the Miss Universe Organisation has officially severed its ties with its Indonesia franchise following allegations of sexual harassment. The decision comes in the wake of disturbing reports wherein more than half a dozen women who were finalists for Miss Universe Indonesia claimed that they were subjected to an invasive body check process just days before the crowning ceremony.
The allegations have sent shockwaves through the pageant world, as these women revealed that they were unexpectedly asked to strip for what was purportedly a body check for scars and cellulite. The incident occurred two days before the crowning ceremony in Jakarta. The women’s lawyer confirmed that photographs were taken of five of the women during this ordeal.
Responding to the troubling situation, the Miss Universe Organisation released a statement on their social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), expressing their disappointment and concern. They stated, “In light of what we have learned took place at Miss Universe Indonesia, it has become clear that this franchise has not lived up to our brand standards, ethics, or expectations.” The organization went on to announce the termination of their relationship with PT Capella Swastika Karya, the current franchise holder in Indonesia, as well as their National Director, Poppy Capella.
The Miss Universe Organisation commended the courage of the contestants who came forward and stressed that creating a safe environment for women is their top priority. The incident has sparked an investigation by the Jakarta police into the women’s complaint, indicating the seriousness of the matter.
Furthermore, the Indonesia franchise also holds the license for Miss Universe Malaysia. In light of the circumstances, the New York-based parent organizer confirmed that there will be no Miss Universe Malaysia competition this year.
Amidst the controversy, the director of the Indonesia franchise, Capella, took to Instagram to vehemently deny any involvement in the alleged body checks or harassment. She expressed her stance against violence or sexual harassment and distanced herself from any knowledge or authorization of such actions.
The Miss Universe pageant is known for its global reach and significance. The Miss Universe Organisation’s statement clarified that there are no specific measurements such as height, weight, or body dimensions required to participate in any Miss Universe pageant worldwide. This is in response to criticisms regarding the elimination of the minimum height requirement for this year’s Indonesia pageant after a winner had already been crowned.
The incident has raised questions about the standards upheld by franchise holders and the responsibilities of organizers to ensure the safety and dignity of participants. Fabienne Nicole Groeneveld, the winner of Miss Universe Indonesia 2023, will still have the opportunity to compete in the finale scheduled for November in El Salvador.
