In a significant political development, Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar, a member of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), has been elected as the interim Prime Minister of Pakistan.

This decision comes as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly, Raja Riaz, reached a consensus on Kakar’s name during a meeting in Islamabad.

The eagerly awaited announcement was made after the two leaders conveyed their recommendation for Kakar’s appointment to President Arif Alvi, who promptly granted his approval under Article 224-A of the Constitution. The selection of Anwarul Haq Kakar is seen as a move towards fostering inclusivity and addressing concerns of smaller provinces.

Anwarul Haq Kakar, an independent senator from Balochistan since 2018, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. During his senatorial term, he served as the chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development. His role extended to being a member of significant committees such as Trade, Finance and Revenue, Foreign Affairs, and Science and Technology. Additionally, Kakar was the parliamentary leader for the Balochistan Awami Party within the Senate.

Kakar’s diverse linguistic skills further enhance his ability to connect with a broad spectrum of the population. He is proficient in English, Urdu, Persian, Pushto, Balochi, and Brahmi languages, as highlighted by the Center for Strategic and Contemporary Research (CSCR), an Islamabad-based research institute.

His appointment is being hailed by political figures from various parties. Former Information Minister and former PTI leader Fawad Chaudhary described Kakar as an honest, educated, and humble Pakistani. Faisal Karim Kundi, a leader of the PPP, welcomed the news and extended his congratulations to Kakar.

Anwarul Haq Kakar’s tenure as Caretaker Prime Minister will continue until a new government is elected through democratic processes. His experience, linguistic abilities, and commitment to serving the nation make him a noteworthy choice for this critical interim role.
