In a recent operation, the Greek coastguard rescued close to 100 boat migrants attempting to make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, while also apprehending three men suspected of being involved in human smuggling. According to a report by EPT state radio on Saturday, the rescue and arrests took place off the coast of Greece.

On the preceding Friday, the coastguard discovered 71 migrants aboard a sailboat near the Aegean island of Karpathos. Authorities believe that these individuals were en route from Turkey to Italy. Subsequently, an additional 27 people were rescued from another boat off the coast of the island of Rhodes.

As part of the rescue mission, Greece is planning to transfer the rescued individuals to a registration camp on the island of Kos. This process allows authorities to properly document and process the migrants while adhering to immigration protocols.

The incident sheds light on the ongoing challenges that Greece and other European Union member states face as people smugglers continue to facilitate illegal sea crossings from Turkey and North African countries. The Mediterranean route has proven to be perilous, with numerous lives at risk as migrants seek better opportunities in Europe.

This tragic situation is a grim reminder of the dangers posed by overcrowded vessels. In mid-June, a devastating incident occurred when an overloaded fishing boat capsized approximately 50 nautical miles (93 kilometers) off the Greek coast, resulting in the loss of several hundred lives.

Authorities are working to address the issue of illegal immigration and human smuggling, but the constant flow of desperate migrants seeking safer shores remains a significant challenge for countries in the region.
