Brazilian soccer star Neymar has been slapped with a hefty fine of 16 million reais ($3.33 million) by Brazilian authorities for violating environmental regulations during the construction of his coastal mansion in southeastern Brazil. The luxury project has been found to breach rules related to the use and movement of freshwater sources, rock, and sand. The allegations were initially raised last month and were confirmed on Monday.
Neymar’s spokesperson has chosen not to comment on the matter. The soccer star’s residence is situated in the town of Mangaratiba, along the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. According to Mangaratiba’s environmental body, the environmental infractions took place during the creation of an artificial lake at Neymar’s mansion.
In addition to the substantial fine, the case will undergo investigation by various environmental control bodies, including the local attorney general’s office, the state civil police, and the environmental protection office.
