Moscow, Russia – Russia has accused Ukraine of orchestrating a drone attack on the outskirts of Moscow, which led to the grounding of flights at a local airport on Tuesday morning. The Russian defense ministry claimed that five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) launched by Ukraine were intercepted, thwarting a supposed terrorist attack.
According to the statement released by Russia’s defense ministry, four drones were destroyed over Moscow, while another was taken down in the city of Odintsovo, located in the Moscow region.

Four Ukrainian UAVs on the territory of New Moscow were destroyed by air defense systems. Another UAV was suppressed by means of electronic warfare and crashed on the territory of the Odintsovo district of the Moscow region. As a result of the thwarted terrorist attack, there were no casualties or damage.”
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of the incident.

At the moment, the attacks have been repelled by air defense forces, all detected UAVs have been eliminated. For security reasons, some flights have been temporarily redirected from Vnukovo Airport. At 8:00 am, restrictions on flights in the area of Vnukovo airport are lifted. No casualties or injuries have been reported, and emergency services are on the scene.”
As a precautionary measure, flights departing from Moscow’s international Vnukovo Airport were temporarily rerouted due to security concerns. However, Moscow Mayor Sobyanin stated that all restrictions were lifted as of 8 a.m. local time (7 a.m. CET), allowing normal operations to resume.
Ukraine has not explicitly confirmed or denied its involvement in the drone attack.
This is not the first time Moscow has experienced drone attacks, with Russian authorities consistently attributing these incidents to Ukraine. In May, Russia claimed to have thwarted a plot targeting President Vladimir Putin after the Kremlin, his official residence in Moscow, was targeted in an overnight drone attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later denied any responsibility, stating that Ukraine does not attack Putin or Moscow, but rather focuses on defending its own territory. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s actions are aimed at protecting its villages and cities.
As tensions between Russia and Ukraine persist, incidents like these further exacerbate the already strained relations between the two neighboring countries. The ongoing conflict continues to impact regional stability and poses challenges to international diplomacy efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.
