Baltimore, USA – In a tragic incident that unfolded during a block party in South Baltimore, two individuals lost their lives and 28 others were injured in a mass shooting, as confirmed by the Baltimore Police.

The victims identified thus far include an 18-year-old girl and a 20-year-old man. The shooting occurred at approximately 12:35 a.m. in the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood, specifically at the 800 block of Gretna Court.

Emergency medical services swiftly responded, transporting nine injured individuals to nearby hospitals, while an additional 20 victims sought medical assistance independently. Among the wounded, three individuals remain in critical condition. The victims’ ages and conditions vary, according to the police.

At present, twelve individuals are being treated at Shock Trauma, and four others were sent to the University of Maryland Medical Center’s pediatric emergency department, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the University of Maryland Medical System.

Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley addressed the media during an early Sunday news conference, stating that detectives are actively working to determine the motive behind the shooting and to identify the suspect or suspects involved.

Mayor Brandon Scott expressed his condemnation of the “reckless, cowardly act” that has forever changed the lives of many. During the news conference, he sent a clear message to those responsible, promising relentless pursuit until justice is served. “We will not stop until we find you. And we will find you,” he declared.

Authorities have described the crime scene as extensive, and the investigation is expected to take considerable time. Numerous officers remained at the scene, working behind police tape in the densely packed two-story housing blocks. The aftermath of the incident revealed abandoned folding tables and plastic cups, left behind as people fled from the gunfire.

The tragedy occurred amidst ongoing efforts by federal prosecutors in Baltimore to combat violent crime in the city. While reported homicides and shootings have decreased from the previous year, with nearly 130 homicides and close to 300 shootings thus far this year, law enforcement agencies continue to prioritize aggressive measures against repeat violent offenders.

In response to the incident, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, in coordination with community-based organizations and city agencies, will implement an immediate neighborhood stabilization response to address the trauma experienced by the community. The Brooklyn Homes Community Center will serve as a central location for residents to access aid and services provided by various city agencies.

Homicide detectives are actively investigating the incident and have requested anyone with information to contact them at 410-396-2100. Individuals who wish to remain anonymous can report tips through the Metro Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-866-7LOCKUP or submit tips via the Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland website.

This unfortunate incident occurred against the backdrop of gatherings taking place across the country in preparation for the July Fourth holiday. In Kansas, a separate shooting left seven individuals with gunshot wounds and resulted in two victims being hospitalized after a stampede ensued as people hurriedly evacuated a nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to local police reports.
