Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Russia’s capital Moscow on Monday. He is expected to emphasize Beijing’s role as a potential peacemaker in the Ukraine war. Russian President Vladimir Putin, on the other hand, is seeking China’s support in response to Western pressure.

Xi Jinping became the first world leader to shake hands with Putin after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant last Friday. The ICC has issued an arrest warrant against Putin for allegedly illegally deporting children after the Ukraine war.

Xi Jinping arrived in Russia on Monday for a three-day visit. This is Xi Jinping’s first foreign visit after becoming president for a third term this month.

Jinping will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This meeting between Xi Jinping and Putin is considered important amid the ongoing war in Russia-Ukraine. China and Russia have interpreted Jinping’s visit as an attempt to deepen the friendship between the two countries. The Kremlin welcomed China’s peace plan for Ukraine and said it would be discussed in talks between Putin and Xi.

According to the media, the meeting between the two presidents and “friends” will begin after dinner on Monday. Xi’s visit to Russia comes as the International Criminal Court on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Putin on war crimes charges. However, Russia has called this warrant ‘ineffective’. Since Russia is not a member of the ICC, its laws do not apply to Russia.

China was one of the countries that lifted sanctions against Russia after the Ukraine war, when the whole West was against Russia. However, it is not so easy for Xi Jinping to openly support Putin. This could increase tensions between China and Western countries. Russia is portraying Xi Jinping’s visit as a “supporter of a powerful friend” against the West.

Ukraine hopes that a formula to stop the war will come out of the meeting between Putin and Xi Jinping. Earlier, Xi Jinping also wrote an article for a Russian newspaper in which he said his visit was a “peace plan” to stop the Russia-Ukraine war. However, Western leaders have expressed doubts about this. Western leaders worry that his visit could actually stoke the flames of war with Moscow.

Jinping’s visit comes days after the International Criminal Court in The Hague charged Putin with war crimes in Ukraine and issued a warrant for his arrest. It can be said that Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Russia is coming at a time when there is intense pressure on Putin at the international level. At such a time, Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow is a clear sign of his support for Russian leader Putin.
