Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav, leader of Janata Samajbadi Party, has been elected as the third Vice President of the country on Friday. Ram sahay Yadav, the candidate supported by Nepal’s eight-party ruling coalition, defeated CPN-UML’s Ashta Lakshmi Shakya and Janmat Party’s Mamta Jha. According to media reports, Yadav secured 30,328 votes from 184 federal and 329 provincial MPs. while Ashta Laxmi Shakya of the CPN-UML received 16,328 and Mamata Jha of the Janamat Party got 2,537 votes in an election held on Friday.

However, the Election Commission is yet to declare the results officially. The report states that apart from his own party, the Nepali Congress, CPN-Maoist Center and CPN-Unified Socialist have voted for him. And now Yadav will replace the outgoing Nand Bahadur Pun.

Journey of Ram Sahai Prasad Yadav
Ram Sahai Prasad Yadav started his political journey in 1990 with the Nepal Sadbhavana Party. He was the founder general secretary of the Madhesi Jan Adhikar Forum and had an active role in the first Madhesh movement (2007). Along with this, Ram Sahai Yadav was elected to the House of Representatives from Bara-2 in the elections held in November last year. He had served as the Minister of Forest and Environment in the former Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government.

Like the President, the Vice President is elected by an electoral college consisting of members of the federal parliament (House of Representatives and the National Assembly) and provincial assemblies. The votes of the 332 electors of the federal parliament and the 550 electors of the provincial assemblies have a total weight of 52,628, thus a candidate needs to obtain at least 26,315 votes to win the election. This is the third vice presidential election since the country adopted the federal democratic republic system in 2008. The term of the Vice President is five years.
