North Korea fired two missiles from a submarine into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, over the weekend, North Korean state media reported Monday.
The state-controlled KCNA reported that two “strategic cruise missiles” were fired from submarine 8.24 Yongung on Sunday morning.
“The two strategic cruise missiles precisely hit the preset target on the East Sea of Korea after travelling the 1 500-km-long eight-shaped flight orbits for 7 563s to 7 575s,” KCNA said.
The Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea expressed satisfaction over the results of the drill, the agency said.
The news agency said Pyongyang is monitoring the situation on the Korean peninsula and in which the ” US imperialists and the south Korean puppet forces are getting evermore undisguised in their anti-DPRK military manoeuvres, and verified the regular operation posture of the nuclear war deterrence means in different spaces. “
South Korea’s Joint Chief Staff (JCS) earlier said it spotted an unspecified missile launch from a submarine in the waters off the city of Sinpo on North Korea’s east coast, without immediately giving further details, Yonhap news agency reported.
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have escalated since last year. Despite the ban by UN resolutions, North Korea is increasingly testing nuclear-capable missiles. Meanwhile, the United States and South Korea have resumed large-scale joint military exercises.
