After more than 100 students were admitted to the hospital in Iran on Wednesday, the President of Iran has instructed the government to investigate the allegations that a number of students were poisoned.

It is mentioned on the President’s website that President Ebrahim Raisi has assigned the Minister of Interior Ahmed Wahidi to deal with the issue of the poisoning of a number of students in some schools as quickly as possible and to ‘provide documented and continuous information’.

Raisi in his statement emphasized that the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Intelligence, and other relevant agencies will work with the Interior Minister to address the issue. He also stressed that any dissemination of information must go through the Ministry of Interior.

Hundreds of female students have been suffering from respiratory problems in the past three months and this may be an attempt to force the closure of girls’ schools in the Islamic Republic, news agencies reported quoting a government official as saying. RFE/RL’s Radio Farda reported that at least 26 schools were affected by the crisis on March 1.

According to the news agency Tasnim, 118 students were admitted to the hospital due to poisoning in three schools in Tehran and the incident in Ardabil. It is mentioned on President Raisi’s website that he assigned responsibility to Wahidi and instructed him to conduct an investigation to “reduce the anxiety of the families of the affected students”.

It has been mentioned that part of the nitrogen mainly used in manure has been found in the schools of the holy city of Qom, but the Ministry of Health has denied the incident saying that it is not completely true.

The cause and number of cases of the poisoning of school girls in several Iranian cities remain unknown. However, according to recent reports, three individuals have been arrested in connection with the incidents, news agency Tasnim reported.
