Do you know – the odds of winning the jackpot are approximately one in 292 million. The odds of being struck by lightning are less than one in a million. Likewise, less than 1 percent of babies born in the U.S. are born with rare twins (‘momo twins’).

Yes, a new rare case like this has happened in America. A woman in the US has given birth to rare twins (‘Momo twins’) – less than 1 percent of babies born in the US are born with these rare twins.

Brittany Alba, an Alabama elementary school teacher, found herself in an extraordinary situation when she gave birth to a second set of identical twins at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Women’s and Infants Center.

Alba gave birth to monoamniotic-monochorionic (MoMo) twins in October 2022. Doctors say that such births are full of complications. Monoamniotic-monochorionic (MoMo) means that the babies share everything except the umbilical cord, which can easily become entangled in a single sac.  Doctors say there is a high rate of stillbirths associated with Momo twins in the US.

What makes Alba’s story even more extraordinary is that she gave birth to both twins in less than 13 months.

Lydia and Lynlee are monoamniotic-monochorionic identical twins, meaning they shared the same placenta and amniotic sac.

Britney and her husband Frankie Alba live in Alabama, USA. Six months after giving birth to her identical twins, Luca and Levi, Alba told the doctors that she was pregnant again. Alba shares her stories adding: “Frankie and I were not trying but it just happened. We just found out we were pregnant … so we go and get our ultrasound.” “And Frankie was like, ‘Are you sure it’s not two?’ He was joking around and [the ultrasound technician] was like, ‘Let me check one more time.’ And she checked again and sure enough, there was a second heartbeat.”

However, after learning the truth, Alba and her husband Frankie were worried when doctors informed them about the risks associated with having Momo twins.

Doctors say that there is a high risk in this rare pregnancy. Alba was admitted at 25 weeks and spent over 50 days in the HRO unit. During her stay, Alba was attended by a multidisciplinary team of maternal-fetal specialists, high-risk obstetrics nurses and neonatologists. The team conducted ongoing prenatal care, including fetal monitoring several times a day to ensure the twins remained well. Given the rarity of her pregnancy, Alba was also visited by medical students, residents and fellows. in the hospital to avoid any kind of risk.

Britney and Frankie Alba are parents to two sets of twins – twin boys and twin girls.

Britney Alba gave birth to twin daughters Lynley and Lydia via C-section. After birth, the newborn was kept in the NICU for further monitoring. Britney Alba’s husband Frankie described the experience as very challenging. “It was a very challenging time in our lives and after our marriage,” he said. “We love spending time with our family and we enjoy every moment.” Now the twin girls have come home after being discharged from the hospital.
