The Taliban on Saturday banned Afghan girls from taking the university entrance exam, local media reported citing a letter sent to private universities and higher education institutions.
Ziaullah Hashmi, a spokesperson for the Taliban higher education ministry, Saturday confirmed to news agencies that they had sent out a letter to private Afghan universities across the country ordering them not to enroll female students for the upcoming spring semester.
The entrance exams are due to take place at the end of February. The letter warned those universities that did not enforce the edict would face legal action.
The decision was followed by another decree from the caretaker government barring women from working at NGOs, which faced strong reactions at the national and international level.
Last month the Taliban government in a letter to higher education institutions decreed that female students are banned from participating in classes.
