Russian missile strikes on Ukraine's capital Kyiv, Kharkiv; Asking people to stay in shelters

On Saturday morning, Russian missiles attacked important infrastructure facilities in the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, and the eastern city of Kharkiv, according to Ukrainian officials. The governor of another region has warned of a major missile attack in the coming hours.

Reuters reported that air raid sirens were sounded in Kyiv after hearing the explosion.
“Explosions in Danoprovsky District. All agencies are on their way to the scene. Stay in your shelters!” Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Russia attacked Ukraine in February last year. After sustained gains in first few months of the conflict, Russian forces had to retreat and cede territory to Ukrainian forces. Since then, Russia has started to attack Ukraine’s infrastructure with missiles.

“Missile attacks on critical infrastructure facilities. The details are being checked,” said Kyrylo Tymoshenko , Deputy Head of the Presidential Office.

The regional governor of Kharkiv, Oleg Sinehubov, said that two S-300 missiles were fired at the city near the Russian border on Saturday morning. He told the media that the attack has damaged important energy infrastructure and industrial facilities in the Kharkiv and Chuhuev districts of the region.

“Our emergency service units and energy workers are working to clear the disruptions and stabilize the situation with energy supply,” he said.

“Infrastructure was hit but there was no significant destruction or fire. All external services are working on the scene. There were no casualties,” the Kyiv City Military Administration wrote in a telegram.

According to the mayor of Kyiv, debris from a missile that fell in a non-residential area of Holosivskyi district, west of Kyiv, set fire to a warehouse building with an area of 20 square meters, but no one was injured.

Similarly, two cars were hit by missile debris in the Darnytsky district, but no one was injured, according to Ukrainian officials.
