The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has banned female students from entering universities until further notice. Afghanistan’s Ministry of Education issued a letter on Tuesday to immediately stop the admission of female students to public and private universities in the country.
On Tuesday, the Taliban-run Ministry of Higher Education decided to ban women from university education until further notice. “Everyone is informed to immediately implement the said order suspending women’s education until further notice,” said the letter signed by Education Minister Neda Mohammad Nadeem.
The Afghan government’s ban on female students at universities has drawn widespread condemnation from around the world.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Wednesday urged the Taliban-led Afghan administration to reverse its decision to ban female students from universities.
In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry expressed its “surprise and regret at the Afghan caretaker government’s decision to deny Afghan women the right to university education.”
The Saudi Foreign Ministry urged the Taliban to “reverse” the ban.
For its part, Qatar’s foreign ministry expressed “deep concern and disappointment” over the ban.
In a statement released by the ministry, it called on the Taliban administration to “review its decision in line with Islamic teachings on women’s rights”.
