South Korea has been in a panic since North Korea fired two cruise missiles from Onchon, South Pyongan province, into the Yellow Sea on Wednesday morning. According to media outlets, the military officials of the US and South Korea are doing a detailed analysis regarding the range and strength of these missiles.

South Korea is now calling for talks with North Korea. South Korea has also offered North Korea huge financial aid in exchange for dismantling the nuclear weapons.

    Ready to provide financial aid
South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol said on the completion of 100 days of his term that if North Korea eliminates its nuclear weapons, we are ready to provide financial assistance to our neighboring country in a phased manner. In his speech, Yoon Suk-yeol said that our government has no plans to pursue its nuclear program. Instead, he calls for more diplomacy.

Dialogue should not be a political show
The S. Korean president said he did not wish to force political change in his neighboring country. In a press conference, the President said that any dialogue between the South-North should not be a political show but to establish genuine peace in the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia. The President said that “we are not saying that N. Korea should first destroy all of their nuclear weapons and we will help him again. We can work on this in a phased manner”.

    North Korea did not respond
However, North Korea has not yet responded to South Korea’s proposal. Earlier, during his election campaign, Yoon had also advocated talks with North Korea. Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in and former US President Donald Trump also held talks with Kim Jong Un regarding the denuclearization of North Korea. Nuclear disarmament talks stalled in 2019 despite meetings between these leaders, and North Korea has said it will not trade its self-defense.

This is the demand of North Korea
North Korea demands that the economic and military sanctions imposed on it should be abolished first, then it will end its nuclear weapons. But, the US says that sanctions will continue if North Korea does not eliminate its nuclear weapons and continues such tests in the future. Earlier, North Korea last conducted a missile test on July 10. Then North Korea fired heavily with rocket launchers. North Korea last tested cruise missiles in January.

North Korea preparing for nuclear test
There is speculation that Pyongyang is preparing to test a nuclear weapon for the first time since 2017. Some experts say it is now becoming clear that South Korea has no clear way of countering North Korea with its nuclear weapons. The North’s recent missile tests and nuclear developments are increasing the demand for a nuclear weapon for itself in South Korea as well. Some South Koreans have called for the resumption of strategic US nuclear weapons that were discarded in the 1990s.

NPT Essential Basis for World Peace
However, South Korean President Yoon said he is committed to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and is working with the US to promote extended deterrence for South Korea. The President said that I believe that the NPT is a very important and essential foundation for world peace.
