Salman Rushdie stabbed on stage at New York event

Salman Rushdie, a popular writer has been attacked on stage in New York State. New York State Police said a male suspect ran up onto the stage and attacked Mr Rushdie and an interviewer.

The suspect was immediately taken into custody, police said.

Salman Rushdie, 75 the Booker Prize-winning author, was stabbed “several times” at 11am at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York state, the New York State Police said in a statement.

Rushdie was flown to a hospital.

State police said Mr. Rushdie was apparently stabbed in the neck. Gov. Kathy Hochul said later that he was alive and “getting the care he needs.”

The moderator at the event was also attacked and suffered a minor head injury, police said.

A video posted on twitter shows attendees rushing onto the stage immediately following the incident. 

Indian-born novelist Mr Rushdie catapulted to fame with Midnight’s Children in 1981, which went on to sell over one million copies in the UK alone.
