    Draupadi Murmu elected as the 15th President of India

    Draupadi Murma has been elected as the President of India. She was elected as the 15th President.

    Murmu, the presidential candidate from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, defeated Yeswant Sinha of the opposition party and won.

    The tenure of President Ram Nath Kovind will end on July 24th and Murmu will take over the office of the President on July 25th. She will become India’s first tribal woman president.

    Droupadi Murmu, 64, was born on June 20, 1958, to Biranchi Narayan in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. She represents the minority Santhal tribe of Jharkhand.

    Murmu is a Santhal, a marginal tribal community, and is from Mayurbhanj in eastern Odisha state. She has spent nearly two decades in politics and social services and was appointed as the first tribal governor of Jharkhand state in 2015.

    Murmu has served as the ninth Chief Minister (Governor) of the state of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. Her grandfather and father were also presidents of village panchayats.

    Murmu was married to banker Shyamsharan Murmu. Shyamsharan died in 2014. Two sons and one daughter were born to Murmu. Her husband and two sons died within four years.

    Before entering state politics, Murmu started working as a school teacher. She also worked as an assistant professor at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute, Rairangpur, and as an assistant in the Irrigation Department of the Government of Odisha.

    Murmu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1997 and was elected councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat and became its president in 2000. She also served as the National Vice President of the Front of Minority Tribes. She served twice as a minister in the state of Orissa.
