U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed Thursday that he will resign as leader of the Conservative Party and step down as prime minister once a replacement is selected.  The announcement came after cabinet ministers and dozens of MPs from his own Conservative Party quit their government roles in the last 24 hours.

“It is clear now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister,” Johnson said outside 10 Downing Street.

Johnson said he’d appointed a new cabinet that would serve alongside him until the Conservative Party selected a new leader to replace him as prime minister.

Last month, Johnson faced a no-confidence vote sparked by members of his Conservative Party after he was found to have broken the law by attending several social gatherings during the country’s strict COVID-19 lockdown. He survived the vote, but the “partygate” scandal over the events at No. 10 Downing Street severely damaged his popularity.

Home Secretary Priti Patel says she is concentrating on the job at hand as Boris Johnson confirms his resignation as Conservative Party leader.

Patel said she would continue to lead the Home Office.

Her role demands she remains “entirely focused on the business of government and our national security”, Patel says.
